Updates applied safely, not automatically
Automatic updates are convenient until a plugin conflict takes down checkout. My process stages updates first: they are applied on a clone, key user journeys are checked, visual differences are reviewed, and only then are they deployed to production with a tested rollback available. Dependencies are tracked for known vulnerabilities so urgent security patches skip the queue while cosmetic updates wait for the scheduled window.
Backups you can actually restore
A backup is only real once it has been restored. Files and database are backed up on a schedule matched to how often your site changes, stored off the origin server, retained long enough to recover from problems discovered late, and periodically restored to a staging environment to prove the process works. For stores, backup frequency accounts for order data, and restores are planned so transactions are not lost.
Monitoring that includes search health
Most maintenance plans monitor uptime and stop there. Mine also watches the things that quietly cost traffic: real-user Core Web Vitals trends, response time at the origin, new crawl and indexing errors in Search Console, broken internal links and redirect chains after content edits, structured data validity, and unexpected changes to robots.txt, canonical tags or noindex directives. A staging site accidentally left crawlable, or a noindex shipped to production, gets caught in days instead of after a traffic drop.
Security hardening as routine
Hardening covers the basics done properly: least-privilege file permissions, disabled file editing in admin, enforced strong authentication with 2FA, rate limiting and bot filtering at the edge, current TLS configuration, restricted admin access, and removal of abandoned plugins and themes that are no longer maintained. Where Cloudflare is in front of the site, WAF rules and caching behaviour are configured to protect the origin without breaking dynamic pages or personalised content.
Development time included
Retainers include a monthly allowance of development hours for the small changes that otherwise pile up: content template tweaks, new landing pages, tracking changes, integration fixes and performance work. Unused time can roll for one month. You deal with one engineer who already knows the codebase rather than briefing someone new each time.
